Rolling thunder

A deeper storm layer with changing intensity.

Thunder alone or a rainy storm?

The player above contains the thunder layer. For continuous rainfall between the rumbles, combine it with rain in the full mixer. Distant thunder works as an occasional detail, so it does not need to match rain in volume. If a rumble interrupts your reading or rest, reduce thunder first. A rain-only background is also a complete option; a storm does not need to be dramatic to feel atmospheric.

A balanced storm mix

Use plain rain at 55%, thunder at 20%, and wind at 10%. Rain should remain the continuous base while thunder moves in and out of attention.

A storm behind glass

Try rain on a window at 50%, thunder at 15%, and campfire at 20%. The sheltered window and fire make the storm feel outside rather than surrounding you.

Avoid too many strong layers

Thunder, howling wind and heavy rain can compete. Pick one dramatic detail and support it with a quieter continuous layer.

Protect your listening level

Thunder has sharper peaks than steady ambience. Begin at low volume, especially with headphones.
