How white noise sounds
White noise contains equal energy per frequency, which gives it a brighter hiss than pink or brown noise. Lower volume usually makes it easier to keep in the background.
Use one steady layer
Begin with white noise at 8% to 12%. Add rain or a fan only if the plain sound feels too sharp; a busy mix defeats the purpose of a simple noise bed.
